Julian Sanchez of the Cato Institute references our Brat Pack Mashup while discussing how the act of remixing media has created a creative platform within which those contributing can communicate.

Says Julian of our video:
“Admittedly, if you’re in the wrong kind of mood, 4 minutes of pretty hipsters being quirky may seem diabetes-inducing. But there’s obviously also something really, deeply great about this: they’re acting in the sense that they’re emulating the original mashup, and the guy who shot it obviously has a strong eye and some experience with video editing. But this is also basically just a group of friends having an authentic social moment and screwing around together. It should feel familiar, and kind of resonate for anyone who’s had a sing-a-long or dance party with a group of good friends.”

90 minutes of sunset, then off to your show down the street.  You in?

This was our pitch to Phoenix before a show they had in New York. We had a contact at Glass Records, their label. We stayed up all night burning dvds. We showed up with said dvd. We thought we were just going to drop it off with the receptionist. No, no, Daniel Glass, the man himself came to get the dvd, and wanted to watch it immediately!

So there we were, with a roomful of employees, a tv and our dvd. They all knew our video and loved it. They loved the pitch. Daniel Glass said he would see what he could do and then told us to keep in touch.

Yes, we screamed like we were on a roller coaster when we got on the elevator.

We shot this in 90 minutes as the sun sunk below the horizon. There were new friends and an old friend who was about to leave us for the greener pastures of Alaska. There were sandwiches and an impromptu picnic. There were photos and undocumented dance parties.

We get a lot of shit about being fucking hipsters but a lot of love about what fun it all looked like. I’m not convinced we’re fucking hipsters but I can assure you it was just as much fun as it looked.

Hey;

You know, this would be a good tie in to having a Heidi-Moving-Away party.
Girl’s gone at the end of the month.

I’ll try to remember how we got power up on the roof.
We’ve had record players & fire breathers, so there must be electricity somewhere, right?
Or, I know the view isn’t as good – but Jro’s rooftop would be private, if that’s a concern.

So yeah, now that I’ve had 30 seconds to think about this:
let’s bill this as the FUCK YEAH SUMMER! Memorial Day Weekend Jawn.
Make up some flyers, create a facebook invite. Let’s do it nuts.
Oh, & on Friday or Saturday, cuz I gotta head down to DC on Sunday.

FUCK YEAH SUMMER!
Rooftop Ruffhouse / Heidi Goodbyes / Boys are Back
Saturday, Before Sunset, May 23rd.
Wear your best neon headband.

get it started;

Ian –

Unicyles – (…?)

I AM IN.

Although I have not seen like half these 80s movies – which I need to promptly do.  If you wanna have movie watching parties, I certainly do.  Evenings are good.

Heidi will be my lens victim.  Sunset will be my accomplice.  And we will not be merciful.

WHEN?

Eric, Jables-

Here is my vision:  we make a parody of this this fan video.

Several groups of us representing each movie.

We capture everything that needs to be cut (closeups on feet, etc), but we guerilla-record like a photojournalist to capture the beautiful moments and the faces and the dancing with minimal choreography.

Justin – I need your roof, your soundsystem, and your love/food.

Eric – are you interested? I need a DP. You are the best there is. Justin is my DJ counterpart that you met at the museum gig. My animal collective video was shot in his apartment. Heidi, the beautiful girl that you wish you could have filmed as the lead in “A Little Death,” I’m imagining as Molly Ringwald in this. You will get to shoot the fuck out of her. During sunset.

Weather – be good. I’m hoping for a sunny day on the weekend of the 21st when Lucky and Bines are here.

This is a welcome to summer party/video.
